DUNDEE ACCESS GROUP

MINUTES OF THE MEETING HELD ON 3RD NOVEMBER 2016 IN THOMAS HERD HOUSE, WARD ROAD, DUNDEE.

 

 

PRESENT:  Erik Cramb, Anne Farrow, Dorothy Wilson, Marie Riley, Carole Craig, Lillian Malcolm, Gordon McDonald, Denis Bethell, Shona Street, Heather Flood.

APOLOGIES:  Sandy Cameron, Denise Cameron.

 

1.      INVITED SPEAKER:

.

We were pleased to welcome Ian Buchanan, Access Engagement Officer at SDEF, to our meeting. He was pleased to tell us that we had won the trophy at the SDEF Access Panel Conference for The Best Community Engagement Project. He complimented us on our submission which had primarily been made by Sandy with the help of Carole. He said that CILPK (Perth and Kinross Access Group) had won the trophy for the Best Access Panel and that Badenoch and Strathspey Access Panel had won one for the Best Access Panel Website.

 

Ian also spoke about the Access Panel Grant of £1600 which can be claimed by each Access Panel this year. This money can be spent on any expenses incurred by members of the Access group towards the running of the group or on anything that would help improve access within their area. Ian said he would send us information to help us develop our publicity materials and he recommended using printing.com to have such materials printed.

 

We thanked Ian for attending our meeting and providing the information we needed.

 

 

2.      MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETING:

 

The minutes of the meeting held on 1st September 2016 were approved.

 

 

3.        MATTERS ARISING:

 

3.1.            (Re minute 2.2).  Carole contacted the Courier but was told that there was no way to get free advertising from them. Erik suggested that when we get the trophy from SDEF we should inform the Courier about our success.

 

3.2.            (Re minute 2.4). Erik will think about a letter to be sent to the Chamber of Commerce.

 

3.3.            (Re minute 2.5).  Avril Smith Hope will be attending our next DAG meeting in December.

 

3.4.            (Re minute 2.7). £250 has been donated to Shopmobility.

 

3.5.            (Re minute 3.5). A cross drain has been cleared at the path at the Riverside Nature Park and hopefully the stones will be cleared over the winter months.

 

3.6.             (Re minute 4.2).  Peter Nurick has agreed to talk to a joint meeting of Dundee Access Group and Dundee Council’s Disability and Age Action Group on 14th December.  

 

 

4        OTHER AGENDA ITEMS:

 

4.1              On 28/10/16 Agnes Emri, Mapping for Change, emailed to tell us about their ‘Ramp it Up’ project. They are inviting local communities around the UK to help businesses in their neighbourhoods make their establishments more wheelchair friendly through an interactive contest where the prize is a portable ramp for their premises. They have asked DAG to encourage Dundee businesses to apply.

 

Dorothy suggested 3 premises close to 1st Stop 2 Shop in Fintry Road and Erik said he would get in touch with them to see if they would be interested.

We had email discussions with Paul Higginson where Dorothy’s suggestions were passed on.

5.17          On 28/9/16 announcement of National Diversity Awards 2016 winners.

 

5.18          On 29/9/16 SDEF Voice Issue 36.

 

5.19          On 30/9/16 from Dorothy Wilson re public meeting about the Regional Performance Centre for Sports on 6th October.

 

5.20          On 30/9/16 Transport Scotland’s Accessible Travel Framework and linked to it the development of an Accessible Travel Hub website.

5.22          On 6/10/16 from Simon Stewart, who looks after the Dundee My Life Portal for the Dundee Health and Social Care Partnership offering to promote DAG.

5.27          On 21/10/16 from Anne Farrow sending a copy of the letter she had sent to the Antalia restaurant in Whitehall Crescent about their disabled toilet not flushing and the space being used to store tables.

 

There has been no reply from the Antalia.

 

5.28          On 21/10/16 from Dorothy Wilson with an update on the state of the path at the Riverside Nature park. Gordon & Lillian had previously complained about it.

 

5.29          On 25/10/16 from DCT Events re Community Spirit Awards 2017.

 

5.30          On 27/10/16 from Dorothy Wilson who had attended the DAAG meeting on 26th Oct. Some members there had expressed an interest in attending the meetings DAG has planned where the speakers will be Avril Smith Hope and Peter Nurick.

 

Dorothy has invited the DAAG members to our December meeting when Avril Smith Hope will be speaking and DAG has been invited to a DAAG meeting on 14th December where Peter Nurick will be speaker.

We have said we are willing to help when they have something specific they want us to do or comment on.

6.1              Shona Street raised questions about crossings and there was considerable discussion.
